What is the Fresh Meat program?

Fresh Meat is a program that takes ordinary, everyday people and turns them into derby players. You will learn the minimal skills you need to be safe on track. The program takes 16 weeks and will conclude with a minimal skills test.

What will I learn?

Pink Peril Roller Derby trains all of its skaters to the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) standards. With commitment from you and guidance from your coaches, by the end of Fresh Meat, you will be a proficient skater who will be able to skate confidently forwards and backwards, stop in multiple ways, jump and more. You will also be able to fall safely, hit and take hit safely, and get an understanding of basic derby strategies.

We will first start with how to skate, brake and fall safely. Once that has been covered, we’ll work our way up to the next set of basic skills, which includes transitioning, jumping and skating in a pack. You will develop your derby voice, learn to work as a team and learn to help each other out.

In addition to all of this, each lesson contains an endurance training and a strength training. The difficulty of these trainings is built up slowly, keeping everyone’s skills and limitations in mind. The endurance training changes every week and varies from skating laps to doing push carts with your teammates. The strength training has the same exercises every week, increasing the amount of repetitions weekly. It consists of push-ups, sit-ups, planking and squatting.

Finally, physical contact is added into the mix! At first we focus on how to keep your balance on skates and how to use the right body posture to handle contact. Together with a teammate you start pushing each other backwards and start to figure out how the game works. After that you’ll start to learn about blocking (preventing other skaters from getting past you) and jamming (trying to pass the blockers to score points).

How much does it cost?

The first Try-out training is free of charge. Aside from gear, the Fresh Meat sessions costs €125 for 12 weeks. Payment must be completed within 30 days after the start of the program. After these 16 weeks the monthly due is €30.

What do I need to be able to play?

To participate in the program you must be over 18.
Besides that you will need to have basic equipment.  These include: kneepads, a helmet, elbow pads, wrist pads, a mouthguard and ofcourse your own set of skates.  Although it’s recommended to get these as soon as possible, you can participate the first classes of the Fresh Meat program by borrowing equipment from the league.

I don’t have any gear of my own yet, where can I get it?

If you don’t have skates and gear when you start, we will hook you up. When you decide to follow the Fresh Meat program you will need to get your own skates and gear. There are alot of online shops which sell Roller Derby Gear, but we recommend to fit skates and gear before buying them.
You can also find a lot of second hand skates and gear online. We have our own sponsor rollerderbyhouse where every Pink Peril member gets discount.

You can always ask the veteran teammates for advice.

Where can I find you?

We train on wednesday and friday nights from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Sporthal de Varenbeuk in Heerlen,
Hei Carisborgweg 19, 6414 NL Heerlen.

Is there anything else I should know?

We expect members to help out with league activities where possible. Because we are a small league we need all the help we can get. All members contribute in some way.
